What a great night for racing as twenty-five cars were on hand Saturday night as Colorado National Speedway hosted the thirty-seventh Challenge Cup Races. After two heat races were run the feature was started heads up as they finished in the heat races. Danny Medina, who won the Trophy Dash earlier in the evening, had the inside front row pole and took off and led the race until the last lap when Chris Eggleston got inside of Medina coming off turn four and with a little push from Kyle Ray on the front stretch pulled even with Medina and eventually passed him going through turns one and two. Kyle Ray stayed on Eggleston’s bumper and finished second with Medina third and Kyle Clegg right there waiting for an opportunity to move into the top spot if somebody made a mistake. The top four cars finished within 0.830 of a second as they crossed the finish stripe. Mike Gallegos came home fifth and Jon Krizman started twenty-fourth and drove to a sixth place finish. I hope I have the above information correct because a lot was happening on the track while all this action was taking place.

The race was a green white checkers with a lot of great driving as the leaders drove through the field lapping many cars. The lapped cars did a good job of getting out of the way, but a few held their spot on the track while racing for positions, and when it was all done, there were no damaged race cars to load on the trailers such as last weekends race. Marc Moser the track announcer gave it a thumbs up and told me to pass along that the drivers did a great job and put on one heck of a race.

Two new cars were on the track last night. Steve Smith of Superior, CO. driving the number ten car was back after many years of being absent from the track. Steve a former pro driver said it had been about six years since he had last raced. Steve was very active in racing his Legend along with his dad who also had a car. Welcome back Steve.

The number forty-six car of Zachary Witherwax also made his season debut last night. Zach drove his car well in his RMLRA debut, and it seemed as if he picked up his speed on the track as he got used to the action around him on the track picked up. Zach lives in Lakewood. Zach, welcome to the RMLRA. I believe Chris Eggleston helped organize this effort for team Witherwax.

Next weekend the RMLRA will be on the road to I-25 Speedway for the last road trip this season. Just a reminder to those of you who need a race at I-25 to qualify for the RMLRA points race. This would be a good time to make the trip down and become eligible. We are always on the short end for race cars down there and we could use your support by being there. Also local cars from the Colorado Springs and Pueblo area, we hope to see you also.
